The 7 Chakras, as I understand them, are intersections of subtle energy in the body.
Each one references an aspect of our being. When in balance, energy moves freely
through these areas and life feels good. When out of balance, we may experience
difficulties including conflicts, physical symptoms and other kinds of distress.

This is a simple chart that's fairly easy to read on this blog.
If you'd like to know more about the Chakras and how to keep or bring
them into balance, I like what Depak Chopra has to say on his site.
Whenever I have an "issue" going on in my body and in my
life, I check it out through my chakras. Sometimes I find the energy calling my
attention isn't really about me at all - it may be coming from the environment I
find myself in, or from others around me, so it's easy to release through attention
to my breath.
I also love referring to Louise Hay's simple, slim book,
"Heal Your Body" which offers a reference for each physical kind of distress
and related beliefs: beliefs that may have created the problem, and alternative
beliefs that can release the distress and return us to a state of ease.
